Gingiva treatment – For strong and solid teeth

What is periodontal disease?

A periodontitis is an inflammatory of the gingiva , which is caused by bacteria. The periodontium consists of teeth, gum, bone and special fibers.
As a result of inflammation of the jawbone recedes, the gum pockets deepen and the tooth root has less and less support.

In addition, an inflammation of the gingiva also affects the whole organism. It acts as a focus of inflammation in the body and carries high general medical risks.
This is often occurs during pregnancy because of a change in hormones. Reasons for a developing a periodontitis, in addition to genetic factors and stress factors, are especially poor oral hygiene and smoking.

Warning signs of a possible periodontal disease?

  • Bleeding when brushing your teeth
  • General bleeding gingiva
  • Receding gums
  • Loosening of teeth
  • halitosis
  • Plaque and tartar
  • Gap formation between the teeth

What can be the causes of periodontitis?

  • Insufficient dental care and interdental care may lead to increased debris and bacterial deposits at the gum line.
  • Genetic factors and systemic diseases may affect clinical signs
  • Smoking increases the risk of developing periodontitis.
  • Sugar is food for bacteria that produce aggressive acids which attack the teeth and gums.
  • Bad dentures or protruding crowns and fillings can lead to irritation at the gum line. First signs are often bleeding gums.

The first steps against periodontal disease

The first therapeutic measure is a prophylactic treatment in which all bacterial deposits are colored and made visible to the patient. After explaining the correlation of bacteria and oral hygiene the bacterial plaque will be removed. Subsequently, the plaque removed by a gentle therapy using ultrasound and polishing.

The external appearance of your teeth at the same time is a little „whiter“ by the powder water-jet device. At the end of this treatment fluorides are applied to the cleaned tooth surface, which increases the resistance of tooth enamel to acids.

To keep this clean surfaces as long as possible, you will get tips and instructions for your daily dental care from a dental hygienist. An important action against periodontal disease is a perfect oral hygiene and a complete removal of all hard and soft plaque.

Of course, here the annual dental check up is recommended.

Periodontitis treatment

If gingivitis persists advanced type of inflammation will occur for which the dentist must clean of the gingival pockets. To ensure a proper diagnosis gingival pocket depths are measured and documented by x-ray images. All severe gingival pockets above 3,5 mm are cleaned within 24 hours to avoid re-infection.

In addition to a regular inspection a professional cleaning is an important step for healthy gums.

Why do smokers have a higher risk of developing periodontal disease

The risk of periodontal disease is much higher in smokers than in nonsmokers.
This has already been proven by different medical studies.

If more than 20 cigarettes smoked per day, the risk of developing periodontal disease increases to as much as six times. If you quit smoking it not only pleases your dentist.
